Aida Šehović at 601 Artspace

A group exhibition curated by PAUL RAMIREZ JONAS and including work by AIDA ŠEHOVIĆ is on view at 601 Artspace from September 22 through November 18, 2018.
A Void gathers works from eight artists who have addressed the absences created by systemic violence against specific groups of people, and juxtaposes them with eight artworks that have been lost to war.
On Thursday, October 11, 2018, 601Artspace hosted a panel discussion in conjunction with A VOID, an exhibition curated by Paul Ramirez Jonas (MFA Faculty). Artist Aida Šehović (MFA Alum, 2010) invited Dr. Kerry Whigham from the Auschwitz Institute for Peace and Reconciliation to join her, and artist Shaun Leonardo invited Jonathan Monsalve, the Project Director of Brooklyn Justice Initiatives. The panel began with a short film about each artists work, and was moderated by Ramirez Jonas.
The exhibition is anchored around George Perec's 1969 novel “A Void”. This book was written without using the letter “e”, or as one would say in French "sans e”, which when read out loud sounds like "sans eux" –which translates to “without them”. “E” is the most common letter in the French language, and this writing constraint is considered a coded reference to the loss of Perec’s family to the Holocaust.
