In 2016, CounterCurrent, The Menil Collection, and Aurora Picture Show in Houston, TX collaborated to produce his work, “Fault Diagnosis.” A five-day multimedia performance event, “Fault Diagnosis” appeared across the city of Houston engaging audiences through live performance, projections, a 1985 Nissan Pulsar NX turned micro-cinema, and nightly audio narratives in the form of a GPS-triggered app. In the summer of 2018, “Fault Diagnosis” was presented in a subsequent iteration at the Salina Art Center in Kansas along with a recent video and photo installation titled “Birdless.” With former Chiara String Quartet violinist Rebecca Fischer, Hawley makes up The Afield, a multidisciplinary duo for violin, video, text, electronics and more. Together they have premiered new and original compositions at National Sawdust in Brooklyn, Boston University, the North Dakota Museum of Art, Bay Chamber Concerts in Maine and twice at the annual Harare International Festival of the Arts in Zimbabwe. The duo has also commissioned works from composers such as Nico Muhly, Paola Prestini, Byron Au Yong, Mathew Fuerst and Lisa Bielawa. Currently, The Afield is in its second year as artists-in-residence at Aster Montessori School in Cambridge, MA where it is pioneering The Afield School, a mobile pop-up educational platform for interdisciplinary art-making and thinking. In 2019, as part of The Afield School, Fischer and Hawley will release “Practice Bo Bactice,” a series of video essays and conversations with artists, composers, and performers. Hawley received a BA in Italian Literature and MFA in writing from Columbia University as well as an MFA in Art Practice from the School of Visual Arts.
